Welcome & Introduction

Welcome to the Solutions For Small Businesses blog! We are so excited to launch our blog as part of supporting our growth as a company. We’d like to use this blog as a safe space to share the many forward-thinking businesses and organizations that we support.

What’s going on with S4SB?

Recently, the owner Katherine Almy worked with Graphics Specialist Charlie Maupin to create our very first QuickTip video. This series of videos seek to help our clients walk through some of the basics of QuickBooks Online. Check it out!

As the seasons begin to change, so have our ads with Mad River Union. Our March ad offers a breath of fresh spring air. We at S4SB recognize that spending time outside can create a balance in our everyday lives, especially during the pandemic. So remember to go for a walk, and get a fresh start with your payroll!

Fish Eggs in the Office?!

Our office is looking a little different these days. Although it is mostly empty due to the pandemic, there is one new addition, a fish tank! Charlie Maupin works for us as a Graphics Specialist, but also works for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Classroom Aquarium Education Program. To help support this program, S4SB is helping Charlie by hosting an aquarium to raise steelhead fish eggs. These eggs have been growing with us since early February and will be released into the wild in early April. The office creates a safe, quiet, and dark environment for these eggs to grow and thrive. As of Saturday, February 20th, the eggs started to button-up, which means they are beginning to absorb their yolk sacs and hide out in the gravel. Charlie and her peers are creating a series of videos called “Think Tank Time” to share with students across the country. Stay tuned for our next blog with links to these videos. By bringing nature into the (virtual) classroom, our team is making a difference in the lives of our future generations.

Fish Update from Katherine - 3/5/20

I checked on our fish friends today, and they've pretty much absorbed their yolk sacs, which now just look like a fish belly. Before, they looked like tadpoles with a fish egg stuck to them, but now they look like itty bitty steelhead. We've all become quite attached to our babies and will be proud to see them released into the wild to seek their fortunes.

What is DEI?

DEI stands for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Each month our blog features a DEI section, to help support all backgrounds of people, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, race, sexual preference, and all other factors. We feature local businesses, events, and opportunities that we can all support to make a difference in our community and beyond. Each month, S4SB donates to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and Black Humboldt. Here are a few ways that we can all make a difference this month.

One simple step that you can take to help join the cause is to support black-owned businesses in your community. If you live in Arcata, Eureka, or surrounding cities, Black Humboldt offers an extensive list of services including fashion & beauty, well-being, arts & culture, restaurants, cafes & bars, religions, and more. By supporting black-owned businesses, you are supporting BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color).

NAACP Eureka is hosting a Black History Month Book Drive! The Book Drive supports Humboldt County K-12 grade school students. You can help meet their collection goal of 500 books by purchasing books from a local bookstore. Donations are being accepted in Arcata, McKinleyville, and Eureka. See the flyer for more details.

An issue that has recently made its way into the front line is the racial discrimination towards Asian Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our community can stand united to act against racism. If you or someone you know has experienced racial discrimination, act now by reporting it through STOP AAPI HATE. Read more about resources for fighting Anti-Asian Discrimination through Air BnB News.
